Elderberry Tonic Preparation

Elderberry tonic is an amazing preventative potion that you can add to your wellness regime each Autumn. Create your own blend or purchase from me here.

Gather your supplies:

  1. Jars with lids - 2 pints for small bag. 2 quarts for large bag. Or whatever you need for your personal blend.

  2. Water - Distilled or filtered is best

    a. 4 cups of water for the small bag

    b. 8 cups for the large bag

  3. Honey or sweetener. Local honey is best if possible. For the small bag you’ll want 1/4 - 1/2 cup. For the large bag you’ll want 1/2 - 3/4 cup.

  4. Your foraged/purchased items or the prepared tonic mix

  5. Pot that is big enough to hold your water and tonic mix

  6. Strainer

  7. Measuring cup with spout. This makes it much easier to add to the jars.

Pour your items into a pot that can accommodate both your tonic mix and the amount of water needed. You’ll need to have enough space to allow for the tonic to simmer.

Stir together your tonic mix and water. Put heat to high until it begins a slow boil. As soon as it begins to boil, lower heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes. This brew will make your house smell amazing! Stir occasionally.

Strain the solids and compost the plant matter. Add the liquid back to the pot and add the honey. Stir until incorporated. DO NOT add additional heat. The ambient heat will dissolve the honey and allow it to mix with the tonic.

Pour into your jars. For either tonic mix you will get a bit more than the pints/quarts. That is the “brewer’s cup”. Allow to cool and take your celebratory drink. Allow the tonic in the jars to cool. Screw on your lid and store in refrigerator. Prepared tonic is good for up to 3 months refrigerated… but I drink daily and it never lasts that long.

Enjoy your tonic! Take a shot daily for prevention. If you begin to feel unwell, you can double or triple your dosage. I incorporate tincture to lessen the symptoms and hasten healing.
